Shopify's complementary product recommendations are manual, so compatibility is your responsibility. Pick six representative products, list the accessories each one genuinely fits, then compare that list against what the Search & Discovery app shows for each product. Where an accessory does not fit, remove it from the complementary list rather than relying on the theme to filter it out.
What Shopify actually controls, and what you control
Shopify separates two kinds of recommendation. Related products are generated automatically and cannot be edited, though you can add your own picks on top. Complementary products are the ones you choose yourself, and they are the ones that carry compatibility risk, because a wrong accessory is a returned order rather than a missed click. According to Shopify's help documentation on customising product recommendations, complementary products are configured through the Shopify Search & Discovery app, and the theme must include a complementary products section that you add to your product pages (Shopify Help).
The same documentation lists the display conditions a recommended product must meet: it must not be sold out, must not have Unlisted status, must not already be in the visitor's cart, and must be Active. For complementary products specifically, inventory must be above zero — the "continue selling when out of stock" setting does not rescue a complementary recommendation the way it can for related products.
That list is about availability, not fit. Shopify does not know that a 38 mm strap does not fit a 42 mm case. Only you do.
Why compatibility errors survive a normal review
Most stores check recommendations by opening two or three product pages and glancing at the row. That misses the failure mode that matters: a recommendation that is plausible in general but wrong for a specific variant. A phone case for the right model but the wrong generation. A filter that fits the machine but not the cartridge size. A charger with the correct connector but insufficient wattage.
These errors are invisible in aggregate reporting because the recommendation still gets clicks. The cost shows up later, in returns and in support messages asking whether the item fits.
A six-product compatibility test you can run this week
Work with six products, not your whole catalogue. Choose them deliberately:
- Two best-selling products with at least one accessory attached.
- Two products with variants that change fit — size, model, generation, capacity.
- One product where you have previously had a fit-related return or question.
- One product with no complementary recommendations set at all, as a control.
For each of the six, write down the accessories you believe genuinely fit, in a plain spreadsheet. Then open the Search & Discovery app, find the complementary products list for that product, and compare. Record three outcomes per product: correct, missing, or wrong.
"Wrong" is the only urgent category. "Missing" is an opportunity. "Correct" needs no action.
Example (hypothetical)
A store selling coffee equipment lists a burr grinder as a complementary product for a pour-over dripper. The grinder is compatible in the sense that both are coffee tools, but it is not an accessory for that dripper, and it costs more than the dripper itself. In the six-product test this would be marked "wrong" — not because the grinder is a bad product, but because it does not belong in the complementary slot for that item. Illustrative only; your own catalogue will differ.
How to exclude a mismatched accessory
Shopify does not offer a compatibility rule engine. Exclusion is manual: you remove the product from the complementary list for that specific product in Search & Discovery. If the same accessory is correct for one product and wrong for another, that is fine — complementary lists are per product.
For larger catalogues, Shopify's documentation describes editing recommendations in bulk using metafields. Treat that as a scaling method to verify, not a shortcut to trust: after any bulk edit, re-run the six-product test to confirm the changes landed where you expected.
What the theme will and will not filter
The theme enforces the availability conditions listed above. It will hide a sold-out complementary product, an unlisted one, a gift card, or one already in the cart. It will not hide a product that is simply the wrong size. If your theme's complementary section has block settings for layout and appearance, those affect presentation only.
One further detail worth knowing: Shopify notes that generated related recommendations change frequently, and the preview inside Search & Discovery often differs from what shoppers see on the storefront. Your manual complementary picks are the stable part of the page, which is another reason to get them right.
A short pre-launch routine
Before you add a new accessory to a product page, confirm three things in writing: the accessory fits the specific variants of the main product, it is in stock above zero, and it is published to the Online Store. Then add it as a complementary product and check the live page once. This takes a few minutes per product and prevents the most common cross-sell error.
If you are also cleaning up product data for feeds, the same discipline of comparing what you claim against what the page shows applies to checking your first Google Merchant Center catalogue.
When recommendations are not the right tool
Complementary products work for genuine accessories: the case, the refill, the spare part. They are a poor fit for bundles, where the customer is buying a set rather than adding to one, and for personalised items, where the recommendation cannot know the customer's specification. If your product requires configuration before purchase, a clear link to a compatibility guide will do more for conversion than a recommendation block.
Follow-up questions
Can I stop a specific product from ever appearing in recommendations?
Not through a single global switch in the way the question implies. Complementary products are chosen per product, so the practical approach is to leave the product out of every complementary list where it does not belong. Related products are generated automatically and cannot be edited, though you can add manual picks alongside them.
Do recommendations update on their own?
Your manual complementary picks stay as you set them. Automatically generated related recommendations change frequently, and Shopify notes that the preview in Search & Discovery will often differ from the storefront. Re-check live pages rather than relying on the app preview alone.
