Since September 24, 2026, Google has been rolling out a multimodal search filter in Search Console. It covers Lens, Circle to Search, images uploaded to Google Search, and Chrome’s search-by-image feature. The filter appears when your site receives relevant traffic: its absence does not necessarily mean your photos are ineffective. Official Google Search Central announcement.
Read the pages, not just the totals
In Performance, choose the multimodal search type, then open the Pages tab. Sort your product pages by impressions and clicks. A highly viewed image might attract general curiosity without buyers ready to order; a less visible page might generate more qualified visits. Separate the countries you actually ship to and compare equivalent periods.
Export the list of pages and add three columns to your spreadsheet: products viewed, items added to cart, and orders. Search Console measures access from Google; your sales tool measures what happens next. Do not infer conversion from a click-through rate.
Choose five photos to monitor
- Open the page on a phone: does the main image show the actual product and its variant?
- Add a detail view that helps with selecting size, material, or compatibility.
- Verify that the image is accessible and that the page text explains what it shows.
- Check price, stock, and delivery on the page receiving the click.
- Revisit the same pages in a few weeks to compare clicks and orders.
The Google Images guide emphasizes page context and image quality. Renaming all files without improving the page will not solve an unavailable variant or a misleading photo.
Decide on your next action
If a page receives visual visits but no cart activity, first examine its promise and purchasing information. If impressions are low, test a more explicit photo on a small group of products. Note the date of the change and avoid declaring an SEO success before you have a comparable volume of data.
