Website Redesign: Save Useful Data Before You Change Anything

Website Redesign: Save Useful Data Before You Change Anything

Take an inventory

Export URLs, pages that receive visits and those that produce requests. Keep texts, authorized images, forms and access. A redesign that starts by deleting the old site also removes the evidence needed to measure what happens next.

Prepare correspondence

For each old address, choose a new equivalent destination if the URL changes. Avoid redirecting all pages to the home page. Keep the pages that still answer a real question and only merge the ones that repeat.

Control uploading

Test pages and forms on the phone, then check HTTP codes, redirects, canonicals and sitemaps. Note the migration date and track important pages in Search Console. A design change and a URL migration carried out together require stricter control.

If the redesign changes URLs, the Search Engine Trends migration guide, another project of our group, helps to prepare and test matches.
