A Shopify variant can now hold up to 20 barcodes. You can add a UPC, EAN, ISBN, GTIN, ASIN, or internal code as appropriate. However, channels and apps that expect a single identifier will continue to read the variant's first barcode. This is the detail to check before a catalog import. Multiple codes, one variant: when is it useful?
The same physical item may have a manufacturer code on the packaging and another used in-store. Associating these codes with the same variant can help the POS system find the right product. This does not allow for grouping two sizes, two colors, or two truly different products under one variant. The code serves to identify; the variant must still represent the correct item, with the correct price and stock.
Shopify allows you to define the type of each code and verifies the format according to the chosen standard. An internal code that does not follow these standards must be declared as such. Do not enter a fake GTIN to fill a field.
Check the priority code before broadcasting
- Export a sample of variants with their SKU, codes, and order.
- Identify the first code for each: this is the one that a single-field feed or application will be able to receive.
- Compare this code against the packaging, the product page, the POS system, and the merchant channel used.
- Test an import, a POS search, and a page sent to the channel before modifying the entire catalog.
The feature requires no migration of old codes: they remain in place. For bulk additions, Shopify provides a "Variant Barcodes" column in the product CSV. For a large catalog, test a few variants first and keep the initial export to roll back if the identifier order is not suitable.
Avoid confusion in product SEO
Structured markup and merchant feeds must describe the product actually displayed. Verify the identifier selected for each variant and avoid publishing multiple contradictory GTINs or an internal code under the GTIN label. A clear page on size, color, availability, and price helps the buyer more than an accumulation of technical codes.
