Available Domain Name? Check the Brand and Ownership Too

Separate technical availability and right of use

A domain displayed as available with a registrar is not automatically free of any trademark risk. Check the related names, the activity concerned and the country concerned before purchasing. A short, pronounceable name is better than a bunch of keywords that are difficult to remember.

Choose the right holder

The domain must be registered in the name of the company or person who owns it, with retrievable contact details. If a provider makes the purchase, ask who has the account, access to the DNS zone, and control of renewal. Document access without sharing a clear password.

Prepare for post-purchase

Enable renewal and check recovery contacts. Before linking the domain to the site, note the existing email records so as not to interrupt messaging. Migrating from an old domain requires a URL plan and redirects, not just a displayed name change.
